I have the Honda repair manual but it isn't exactly clear on this part, another thing is visually I'm going off of this video too.

My question is, I have the j35A7 VCM odyssey engine, and I'm not sure but is the tensioner different than a non-VCM engine? Does it have a different releasing mechanism than the non-VCM engine?

I think i have most of the stuff already I need which is the crank bolt socket, crank holder tool, serpentine belt tool, an extra breaker bar, and my impact wrench plus multiple tools I have, last is im ordering a torque wrench I have had before from Amazon. Things I have are the Aisin Timing Belt kit, comes with timing belt, water pump, hydraulic tensioner, tensioner bearing, water pump gasket and O-rings, also along with the timing belt I'm replacing serpentine belt, coolant with Zerex Asian Blue, thermostat, radiator cap, spark plugs. I bought the car almost 2 years ago used, previous owner said he hasnt done it so I thought it was about time to do it. But with a used engine that may be iffy - but from the dealer that should be good.So my Honda Odyssey is at 150k miles and I'm going to do the timing belt. They may offer to pay the pro-rated cost - as in, they'll say your vans lifetime is, say, 50% gone, so therefore they'll only pay 50% the cost. IF they offer to cover the cost, you're cool. (6) After getting the engine fixed, I went to Concord Honda to let them know how upset I was, and I had been a loyal customer for 6 years, always servicing my Odyssey with them, and the Service Manager said there's nothing he could do, and if I had spoke with him, he would have fixed it for free under warranty. They replaced the engine with used engine.

(5) I spent 5K to get the engine fixed at Dublin Honda. (4) I spoke with HondaCare and they said they will not cover the snapped timing belt because of (2) and (3) above (3) I called Concord Honda and 2 different Service Techs said they will not cover the snapped timing belt under warranty because it's been 19K miles since they replaced it (123K minus 104K) and the warranty only covers 12K miles or 12months (1) I had the timing belt replaced last year for the 100K service, at 104K miles on the odometer at Concord Honda Dublin Honda calls me the next day and says my timing belt snapped and I need a new engine! Called AAA and had the car towed to Dublin Honda. 123K Miles, driving on freeway about 70mph, engine lost power and I was able to coast the car to the shoulder.
